GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (DPI) – Senior minister in the office of the president with responsibility for finance, Dr Ashni Singh, said Guyana remains committed to the regional integration movement while advocating for improvements in the living conditions of the Cuban people.
The minister made the remarks during a live recording of BBC World Questions hosted by the BBC World Service at the Pegasus Corporate Suites, Georgetown, where panellists discussed Guyana’s foreign policy and its relationship with Cuba.
Responding to a question about whether Guyana’s position on Cuba represents a shift away from traditional regional alliances, Dr Singh rejected suggestions that the country has distanced itself from the Caribbean community.
“Guyana was a founding member of CARICOM, and we are the home of the CARICOM Secretariat,” he said, referring to CARICOM. “We remain extremely committed, fully committed to the regional integration movement and to the CARICOM and Caribbean project.”
Dr Singh clarified that president Irfaan Ali’s remarks about Cuba focused on the necessity for better conditions for the Cuban people.
“President Ali’s call was for an improvement in the lives of the Cuban people,” Singh stated.
During the BBC forum, the minister emphasised that Guyana’s position is consistent with its commitment to democracy and development across the region. He noted that the president’s remarks focused on the need for progress that would improve the social and economic circumstances of ordinary Cubans.
The finance minister reiterated that Guyana maintains strong relationships with its Caribbean partners and continues to play an active role in regional initiatives.
“Guyana remains extremely committed to the regional integration movement,” he said.
Moderated by BBC journalist Jonny Diamond, the forum brought together political leaders, business representatives and civil society voices to discuss issues ranging from economic growth and governance to foreign policy and regional cooperation.
